How can I Join The Adventure?
Let's start with the basics: you don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls to get involved with Scouting - all you need is a can do attitude and a willingness to help others whilst having some fun along the way!
Scouting works best when there is a team of people, all with different skills working together. So maybe you're the idea person to deliver first aid training? Are you good with numbers? Handy in the kitchen? Or are you a DIY whizz? We all have different skills and you could have the ones we urgently need.
But I don't know anything about Scouting!
Don't panic: that's not a problem - prior Scouting experience isn't needed to become a really useful volunteer. If you've got the right attitude and are willing to learn we will deliver the training which can help you gain externally recognised qualifications, skills and having a brilliant time. Scouting also offers the chance to build on personal skills, like teamwork, confidence and leadership.
A study found that over 90% of our volunteers believe that the skills and experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives.
When and where do you meet?
We have 9 Scout Groups based across our District, have a look where they are and when they meet on our map here.
Pushed for time?
Whilst our youth sections generally meet on a weekly basis, there is no expectation or commitment to attend everyone. We offer flexible volunteering based on the idea that your volunteering role fits around your life, and by joining a team we aim to spread the workload and ensure people only do as much or little as they can offer.
What do different Scouting roles do?
Unless you're familiar with Scouting jargon, we accept that many of our role titles won't mean much to you! The table avalable here attempts to explain this by relating some of the roles in a Scout group compared to the roles you may be familiar within a school.
More detailed descriptions of these are provided on The Scout Association website here.
